White Campion
Silene Latifolia / Silene Alba
cow-rattle, cockle, cuckoo flower, thunder-flower, white bachelors button, white robin
A perennial with an attractive flower head with 5 white petals. It can produce pinky hybrids when growing alongside the red campion. With a flowering period from May until October, its habitats are mostly grasslands and farmlands, often on the edge of cornfields or hedgerows.
White campion will grow in most open habitats, particularly wasteland and fields, most commonly on neutral to alkaline soils. Despite the wide array of conditions in which campion can thrive, it prefers sunny areas that have rich and well-drained soil. It is also named the Grave Flower or Flower of the Dead in parts of England as they are seen often growing on gravesites and around tombstones.

This plant can grow as an annual, biennial, or short-lived perennial, meaning the same plant can grow for one, two, or several years. Overnight the flowers release a scent to attract feeding moths, which then pollinate the flower. It grows well next to hedges that provide partial sun and shade. This drought-resistant plant can flower from May right through September.
